Some studies on Ephram. I am having trouble finding the balance between geeky scholar and hot rebel. I think Ephram doesnt know he's hot and his cool afro is because he forgets to get his hair cut.
This is our first look at Rosacia the leader of the Goon squad that guards the city gate. She plants her big platform shoe right in the face of all those who get in her way. If there was a living inspiration it would be Betty Davis -Cuz she's a biiiiiig Freeeeak!
Things are cooking on the back burner and I'm happy that Zan is going to help with text design on Teleny. Nathan is going to give me some notes and I am going to sock that sucker into the sky real soon. Until then I will draw my afros and dream my dreams of funky jazz and a new world.
The rosicrucian priestess and her dog. I'm going to have to hang with G's pack to get the look right. There will be lots of dogs running through egyptian temples under the neon lights.
Here are some more lovely afros. Like all the different aspects of Charles Mingus there are a whole range of styles going on in the Mingonian district. The goon squad that guards the main gate is decidedly funky.
I did some sketches of Charles. He appears only once in a flashback and I may not show his face. This story has never been meant to say anything about him. This is all about the Charles Mingus that I wanted and has no basis in reality. I do think he would approve of the sex though.
character sketches. I like more of a Nina Simone face over a Halle Barry. These are still early explorations and I hope to move away from any trace of the dreaded Marvel comics silver age.
Here is my first image of the Rosicrucian metropolis that surrounds Mingo City. This may or may not be San Francisco in 100 years. Mingonian enclave is south of market to china basin.
The Rosicrucians and the Masons love their building projects.
This will be my sketchbook blog for my new graphic novel "The Sebaceous Funk" a science fiction story about the mysterious doings of the cult of Charles Mingus. I hope to stay motivated and let people see what I am up to. This will only be pencil sketches that I will later use to make the book. The only text will be my own personal notes on where these images came from, what inspired them and why.
